8 SPANISH GALGOS IN THE USA

Last September 16th, 8 Spanish galgos have travelled to the USA, as new ambassadors of the atrocities ans maltreatments that thousands of greyhounds must endure every year in Spain.  Anna Clements, together with volunteer Sonia Martinez and the Spanish artist from Galicia Carmen Ossorio are meeting with friends who help SOS Galgos since its foundation, and are also visiting Spanish galgos who over the years have become 'American citizens'.

Thank you very much to those who have made this trip possible, specially Delta Airlines and those who have made donations to cover part of the expenses of the trip, and also to the volunteers who have fostered these fortunate greyhounds and have taken them to Barcelona airport forming part of such a wonderful team.

Gigi: Found abandoned in Zamora and saved thanks to Isabel and Charo. Sent to Barcelona thanks to Sonia's offer to foster her. Extremely frightened and heavily pregnant, she underwent what turned out to be a complicated surgery because of Von Willebrand Factor deficiency. After a transfusion and veterinary care by Dr. Albert Sordé and Marisa, recovered completely and will soon be Jordan Graustark's galga and live and be much loved in New Hampshire with her, together with galgos Mafi and Teo also adopted from SOS Galgos over the years. Jordan's will to adopt Gigi was the push SOS Galgos needed to consider taking a whole group of galgos. One can say that thanks to Jordan, all these other galgos leaving are going to be very happy.
Dago: Paloma, a lovely female happy go lucky galga, rescued by Edgardo and Laly in Toledo was supposed to travel but her fight against leishmania, heartworm and tick transmited diseases needed more time in a quite environment and so Dago, who was rescued wandering in the streets of Zaragoza, took her place. He's a strong and huge male, not friendly with cats and male dogs but extremely gentle with people. He will be fostered for adoption through AEGA
Atari: a rescued retired Irish greyhound from Spain's last greyhound track - Meridiana in Barcelona - will soon be Luellyn's girl in the US. Luellyn and SOS Galgos go back many years when Luellyn flew over to help when the Plaza España track in Barcelona closed back in 1999 and adopted Little Song, who recently passed away.
Mari: a once Spanish hunting champion and like so many when no longer a winner became unwanted, but thanks to Maria Eugenia from the Jaen animal shelter and Monica in Barcelona, Mari came to Barcelona to a foster home with Italian dentist Diletta. Mari needs a home with a yard because she is terrified of the outside world and needs to feel safe.Luellyn has decided to keep her too and surely Atari will help her gain confidence.
Chico: a happy-go-lucky one year old male was seen in a local shelter in Cadiz awaiting to be put down when Silvia took him home until she contacted SOS Galgos and then he travelled up to Barcelona to be hosted by Klea who has cared for him well in foster care. Chico will soon be in Pittsburgh where Marci and Dave will find him his forever home.
Sila: she was found wandering fields on the outskirts of Barcelona, and rescued by the Vilafranca animal shelter who contacted us to help place her. She's a lovely black female girl who also needs a yard because of her young age. She was nearly adopted in Barcelona but Sila didn't quite adapt to a life of freedom and to keeping distance with horses the family used to ride. Now she will live in Pittsburgh with Beverly.

Dandy: he suffered immensily when rescued. He was picked up by the garbage service of a village in the province of Jaen in the South of Spain and kept in a tiny and filthy cage with dirty water, the cage was actually flooded itself with water. When we saw the photos, we immediately got him out of there and sent him up to be fostered by artist Carmen Ossorio who has cared for him well. Dandy will be fostered for adoption through AEGA.

Romeo:  rescued by Edgardo and Laly in Toledo, like dozens in that area of Spain that have only found hapiness after the protection of such wonderful volunteers. We are so grateful that Leslie is flying especially to Boston to adopt Romeo and escort him home to soon become a Californian boy!
Payo:  a victim of being hanged. He eventually let a kind human being who wanted to help him, go near him and thanks to Estrella and her wonderful team at the Arca de Noe animal shelter in Seville he was put into a boarding kennel and taken to the vet daily to cure the awful wound around his neck. Payo has fabulous stunning yellow eyes which express the fear he has been through. Thanks to Brian and Mark from Maryland, Payo will live a happy life with their three male greyhounds and their cat. Payo is one of the lucky ones.

Don't miss the web site that Jordan Graustark, the adopter of Gigi, has designed, with photos of the fortunate greyhounds.
